What is acupuncture?

What is acupuncture? How does it work?

Acupuncture works by reminding the body how to heal itself—like pressing the reset button on a system that’s been running too hot, too cold, or just plain out of sync. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the body is seen as an interconnected web of energy, or Qi (pronounced chee), flowing through meridians that nourish organs, tissues, and even emotions. When Qi is blocked, deficient, or unregulated, it can show up as pain, fatigue, stress, or illness. Acupuncture clears these blockages, strengthens what’s needs strengthening, and restores harmony, helping the body get back into its natural rhythm. Every point on the body acts like a little command center, influencing physical and emotional well-being—whether it’s calming the nervous system, improving digestion, easing pain, or boosting mental clarity.

From a Western medical perspective, acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system, encouraging the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers), serotonin (the happy chemical), and other neurotransmitters that help regulate mood, pain, and inflammation. It also increases circulation, bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients to tissues while reducing swelling and tension. Research has shown that acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body out of fight-or-flight mode and into deep relaxation, where true healing happens. It can help regulate hormones, balance the immune system, and even improve sleep by increasing melatonin levels.

At its core, acupuncture isn’t just about treating symptoms—it’s about bringing the body back to balance so it can function at its best. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, stress, digestive issues, hormone imbalances, or just feeling “off,” acupuncture is like a tune-up for your whole being—mind, body, and soul. It’s ancient wisdom, backed by modern science, and it meets you exactly where you are to help you feel like yourself again.

Curious about the science behind acupuncture? While Traditional Chinese Medicine explains it through the flow of Qi and balance of yin and yang, modern research shows how it affects the nervous system, circulation, and brain chemistry.
